Abstracting the human experience, through gestural mark making and colour.” My work explores the female experience as transitional and fluctuating. My background in dance informs both my visual and emotional observations of the complexities and contradictions of the human form. I’m particularly intrigued by the synchronicity of my professional transitions and my shifts in identity and societal “role” as a modern white woman in western culture. From working in the medium of dance as a maiden; to aerialist as an independent female moving into motherhood; followed by gestural painting as a mature woman charged with the role of channelling energy and clarity. My processes, being based in play and driven by impulse, are rooted in a sense of duality and responsiveness with my tools and materials. I select my tools as a response to my sensory impulses: I focus on physical processing of stimuli and eliminating conscious thought, to tap into my emotional being. My goal is to honour the impulse without intellectualising it. Playing with fluid materials allows me to have ‘conversations’ with my work, responding to them as much as to my own urges and ideas. My preference for working in large scale stems from my need to remain instinctive, experimental, and introspective with my work. Larger canvases provide me with the space I need to connect on a physical and kinaesthetic level with my medium. That being said, my smaller works, and works on paper are crucial to my exploration of new directions.
