Abstracting the human experience, through gestural mark making and colour.” My work explores the human experience and its multi-layered complexities and contradictions. My background in dance informs both my visual and emotional observations of the human form, and indeed movement plays a large part of my process and in the resulting pieces. My processes, being based in play and driven by impulse, I feel are always changing, but rooted in a sense of duality and responsiveness with my tools and materials. Whatever the initial trigger or idea, my selection of tools is always determined from a sensory perspective: I look to focus on the physical processing of stimuli and eliminating conscious thought, to tap into my emotional being. My goal is to honour the impulse without intellectualising it. Playing with fluid materials allows me to have ‘conversations’ with my work, responding to them as much as to my own urges and ideas. My preference for working in large scale stems from my need to remain instinctive, experimental, and introspective with my work. Larger canvases provide me with the space I need to connect on a physical and kinaesthetic level with my medium. That being said, my smaller works, and works on paper are crucial to my exploration of new directions.
